Ruth May
Writer, reader, wife, mother, sister, friend, and not necessarily in that order.
I’m a Brisbane-based writer with a passion for psychological thrillers and complex characters. I was born and raised in Yorkshire, England, where the wild moorland landscapes and tales of notorious crimes first sparked my fascination with the psychology of criminals. I’ve always been curious about what drives people to make the choices they do, especially when those choices cross moral boundaries. That curiosity evolved into a lifelong love of reading and eventually writing crime fiction with a psychological edge.
Thirty years ago, I moved to Australia after meeting my husband, and I’ve proudly called Australia home ever since, first in Sydney and for the last 22 years, Brisbane. I have two amazing adult children who are my biggest supporters and cheerleaders. Their encouragement fuels my writing and reminds me every day to keep pursuing my dreams.
My debut novel, The Watcher's Prey, is a psychological thriller that delves into crime, suspense, and the intricate dynamics of human relationships. Alongside this, I’m working on The Twisted Series, a six-part collection exploring crime, family, manipulation, and the darker corners of human nature. It’s a labour of love that lets me dig into interconnected characters and the ripple effects of shared pain.
I’m also working on another stand-alone novel; Three Little Lies which is the first time I’ve attempted a ‘seat of the pants’ approach. I normally outline so I know exactly where I’m going. With Three Little Lies I’m still not sure how it ends.
In 2023, I completed the Faber Writing a Novel Program, an experience that was both challenging and transformative. An extract from the first book in the Twisted Series, Twisted Connections, was featured in the Faber 2023 Anthology, and I’ve had the privilege of reading at literary events, including a Salon hosted by Brisbane’s beloved Avid Reader Bookstore, which champions emerging writers. I also read an extract of Twisted Connections at the Brisbane Writers Festival in 2024 as part of the Faber 2023 Anthology launch.
Beyond my own writing, I’m actively involved in the literary community. I’m a regular reader for the Queensland Writers Centre’s Publishable and Adaptable programs, which support emerging authors, and in 2025 I had the honour of serving as a judge for the Romance Writers of Australia Star Awards.
Writing, for me, is both passion and perspective. A way of understanding the human mind. From the windswept moors of my Yorkshire childhood to the sunlit landscapes of Queensland, I continue to be inspired by the complexities of human behaviour, the thrill of suspense, and the endless possibilities of imagination.
I’ve chosen to self-publish because I got tired of telling my kids to pursue their dreams and them telling me ‘You first.’ This journey that I’m embarking on is partly fuelled by my passion for the writing that I’ve done, but also in part to prove to my kids that it’s OK to put yourself out there and if you fail, you fail. You pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and keep going.
If you’re a writer, you already know how important it is to get your work out there. Whether you write fiction, non-fiction, poetry, or anything in between, you want readers to discover your stories and connect with them.
But let’s be honest, sometimes putting yourself out there feels a bit like standing on the side of a busy highway, waving your arms around and yelling for attention as everyone speeds past. It’s frightening, exhilarating, and there are moments when you wonder if anyone even hears you. But this is where I find myself, standing by the side of the Internet highway, waving my arms around like a lunatic.
