If you’re a writer, you already know how important it is to get your work out there. Whether you write fiction, non-fiction, poetry, or anything in between, you want people to find your stories and connect with them.
But let’s be honest, standing out in today’s crowded market isn’t easy. So how do you make sure your writing reaches the right audience?
I’ve pulled together a few tips that have worked for me when it comes to marketing and promoting my writing, both online and offline. I’ll say upfront though, this is all based on my own experience. If you have the budget to bring in a professional, I’d definitely recommend it. Getting your marketing right, especially if you’re self-published, can make a huge difference to how your book is received.
Online marketing and promotion:
Create a website or a blog for your writing. This is your online home base, where you can showcase your portfolio, share your news and updates, and connect with your readers. You can use platforms like WordPress, Medium, or Substack to create your own site or blog easily and for free or low cost.
Use social media to build your online presence and network. You can use platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn to share your writing, interact with other writers and readers, and join relevant groups and communities. You can also use hashtags, keywords, and tags to increase your visibility and reach.
Publish your writing on online platforms and magazines. You can use platforms like Medium, Wattpad, or Vocal to publish your writing and reach a wider audience. You can also submit your writing to online magazines, journals, or anthologies that cater to your genre or niche. You can use sites like Submittable or Duotrope to find suitable opportunities.
Join online writing contests and challenges. You can use sites like Reedsy or Writer's Digest to find and enter online writing contests and challenges that match your interests and goals. You can win prizes, get feedback, and gain exposure for your writing.
Build an email list and send newsletters. You can use tools like Mailchimp or ConvertKit to create and manage an email list of your subscribers. You can use newsletters to share your writing, updates, tips, resources, or anything else that might interest your readers. You can also use newsletters to promote your books, products, or services.
Offline marketing and promotion:
Print business cards and flyers for your writing. You can use sites like Vistaprint or Canva to design and print professional-looking business cards and flyers for your writing. You can include your name, genre, website, social media handles, and a catchy tagline or slogan. You can distribute them at events, bookstores, libraries, cafes, or anywhere else where you might meet potential readers.
Attend local events and meetups for writers and readers. You can use sites like Meetup or Eventbrite to find and join local events and meetups for writers and readers in your area. You can network with other writers, learn from experts, pitch your work, get feedback, or even read your work aloud.
Join local writing groups and clubs. You can use sites like Meetup or Facebook to find and join local writing groups and clubs in your area. You can meet regularly with other writers who share your interests and goals. You can exchange ideas, critique each other's work, support each other's projects, or collaborate on anthologies or events.
Take part in local book fairs and festivals. You can use sites like Book Fairs Finder or FestivalNet to find and take part in local book fairs and festivals in your area. You can sell or sign your books, meet readers and fans, network with other authors and publishers, or give talks or workshops.
Donate or consign your books to local libraries or bookstores. You can contact local libraries or bookstores in your area and ask them if they would be interested in receiving or selling your books. You can offer them a discount or a commission for each sale. You can also ask them if they would be willing to host a book launch or a reading event for you.
If you're looking for independent bookstores in Brisbane that host book launches and writing events, you're in luck! Here are some of the best ones to check out:
