Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn

I’m trying to think about Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn and how I feel about the story.

Firstly, it is written incredibly well. The characters are flawed in ways that are relatable, and even though they may be flawed in ways that we haven’t all experienced, there’s an empathy in the writing that really allows you to feel what the lead character is feeling. There were times when I struggled with that, particularly because of how closely the writing pulls you in.

What I enjoyed most were the twists and turns. I loved that the plot and the tension grew organically from the story. I also loved that the characters, especially the key characters, were quite relatable. I liked the twist at the end too.

What I didn’t enjoy was that, for me, the ending was really quite sad. I don’t want to give away spoilers, but if you’ve read or watched Gone Girl, you’ll notice that this particular author has a style.

Would I read it again? Yes, I think I would. Would I recommend it to a friend? I think if you’ve read Gone Girl and liked that style of writing, then yes, you would probably enjoy this book. Is it everybody’s taste? Probably not everyone’s, but I think it would appeal to readers of psychological thrillers.
