Writer's block is something I think every writer struggles with at some point, and it's certainly something I've experienced over the years. That's why I decided to listen to the audiobook of Conquering Writer's Block and Summoning Inspiration by K.M. Weiland.
Having been writing for over 30 years, I have to admit that around 90% of the advice wasn't new to me. Most of the strategies were things I'd encountered before in one form or another. But honestly, that wasn't surprising. The longer you've been studying the craft, the more likely you are to come across familiar ideas.
What made this audiobook worthwhile was the remaining 10%. There was one particular strategy, or perhaps a fresh way of looking at a strategy I already knew, that really resonated with me. I've started putting it into practice, and so far it seems to be working, which is always encouraging.
I often think about writing books the same way my mother thought about cookbooks. She always said that if you found just one great recipe in a cookbook, then it had been worth buying. I feel exactly the same way about books on writing. I own a lot of them, and if each one gives me just one new idea or technique that improves my writing, then it's been a worthwhile investment.
If you're new to writing, you'll probably find plenty of practical, encouraging advice here. If you've been writing for many years, you may find much of the material familiar, but don't dismiss it. Sometimes one fresh insight is all it takes to move your writing forward, and for me, that alone made this audiobook worth listening to.
