The Murder Rule by Dervla McTiernan

This was only my second Dervla McTiernan novel, and I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. The Murder Rule is very much a slow-burn thriller, taking its time to build the story and develop the characters. While I felt there was a slight dip in the middle where the pace slowed, it more than made up for it with an exceptional final act.

The twists towards the end were fantastic; clever, well-earned, and completely changed the way I looked at everything that had come before. McTiernan keeps the story moving forward with strong, believable characters who feel relatable rather than over-the-top.

What I appreciated most was that, despite being a thriller, the story never pushed the boundaries of reality. The plot remained grounded, making the suspense feel all the more effective because I never found myself thinking, "There's no way that would happen." Instead, the legal setting and layered mystery felt authentic and convincing.

If you enjoy intelligent, character-driven thrillers that reward your patience with a gripping and satisfying conclusion, The Murder Rule is well worth the read. I'd happily recommend it, and it's definitely encouraged me to pick up more of Dervla McTiernan's books.
